 Dans cet atelier nous explorerons une série de méthodes innovantes pour étudier les pratiques d'occupation et d'usage des espaces urbains. Ces méthodes basées sur la mobilisation de traces numériques permettent de saisir le rapport à l'espace en passant par le Smartphone. Ces approches mêlent les dimensions en ligne et hors ligne pour les saisir conjointement et investiguer le vécu concret des occupant-es des espaces publiques. Nous verrons notamment en quoi la création des nouveaux dispositifs comme une application permet de récolter des données originales sur le rapport à l'espace urbain.

Les recherches numériques sont souvent associées aux données massives et peuvent être perçues comme distantes voir en opposition aux espaces urbains. Durant cette journée, nous chercherons à faire un pont entre ces dimensions complémentaires en montrant que les données numériques et la recherche ethnographique peuvent se joindre dans des protocoles de recherche en sciences humaines et sociales.

L'atelier intégrera réflexion conceptuelles et théoriques, et laissera une partie importante à la mise en pratique des idées et des méthodes présentées et à la discussion des possibles applications aux sujets de recherche des participants.

Dans l'atelier, nous accueillerons Anders Koed Madsen, professeur associé à l'Université d'Aalborg où il dirige la pratique expérimentale du TANTLab (www.en.culture.aau.dk/research/research-groups/tantlab). Anders a développé « Soft City Sensing » comme cadre pour cartographier et conceptualiser l'infrastructure sociale des publics urbains à travers les traces numériques qu'ils laissent de leur vie urbaine. Ce travail s'appuie sur son expérience interdisciplinaire en philosophie pragmatiste, sciences humaines computationnelles, études Internet et en analyse organisationnelle.

Nous accueillerons également l'équipe du projet Appropriation des espaces urbains et numériques par les jeunes en Suisse: Enjeux de reconnaissance co-dirigé par La Prof. Balleys (medialab, Genève) et la Prof. Colombo (Hets, Fribourg) qui mobilise une méthodologie ethnographique en ligne/hors-ligne en plusieurs étapes passant des paysages urbains aux paysages numériques fréquentés par les jeunes en Suisse.

English abstract :

In this workshop we will explore a series of innovative methods to study the practices of occupation of urban spaces. These methods exploit smartphone technologies to mobilize a series of digital traces to grasp the relationship between urban spaces and their users. These approaches combine online and offline dimensions to grasp them jointly and investigate the concrete experience of public spaces. We will see in particular how the creation of new devices, such as an app, makes it possible to collect original data on the relationship to urban space.

Digital research is often associated with big data and can be perceived as distant or even in opposition to urban spaces. During this day, we will seek to make a bridge between these complementary dimensions by showing that digital data and ethnographic research can be combined in integrated research protocols for the humanities and social sciences.

The workshop will integrate the theoretical and methodological reflections with their practical application to the research subjects of the participants.

The workshop will be animated by Anders Koed Madsen, associate professor at Aalborg University where he serves as head of experimental practice at TANTLab (www.en.culture.aau.dk/research/research-groups/tantlab). During the last five years he has developed 'Soft City Sensing' as a distinct framework for mapping and conceptualizing the social infrastructure of urban publics through the digital traces they leave of their urban life. This work draws on his distinct interdisciplinary background in pragmatist philosophy, computational humanities, internet studies and organizational analysis.

The workshop will be animated by the team of project Appropriation des espaces urbains et numériques par les jeunes en Suisse : Enjeux de reconnaissance co-directed by Prof. Balleys (medialab, Geneva) and Prof. Colombo (Hets, Fribourg) which mobilizes an online/offline ethnographic methodology in several stages moving from urban landscapes to digital landscapes frequented by young people in Switzerland.
